Why SMEs Need Reward Support
Partner blog:
Reward Heads
We asked our partners at Reward Heads to explain why reward support is important for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Here’s what they shared:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the UK economy. Defined as organisations with fewer than 250 employees, there are almost 6 million SMEs in the UK, making up 99.9% of all private employers.
They might be start-ups, scale ups or frankly happy with the size that they are. We have clients in all of these groups.
These businesses play a vital role in innovation, community employment, and local economies. But while they’re often closer to their people than large corporations, they face unique challenges when it comes to attracting, motivating, and retaining talent, particularly when it comes to Reward.
Reward: the missing piece for many SMEs
Reward isn’t just about pay. It’s about the full package: pay structures, bonuses, benefits, recognition, wellbeing, development, culture and more. It’s how an organisation shows people they’re valued and it’s central to engagement and retention.
But here’s the problem: SMEs need the same level of reward expertise as a large business, without the same resources.
They don’t need a full-time, year-round Head of Reward or even a Reward Manager, which wouldn’t be cost-effective. Yet they still need someone who can:
- Bring the right expertise and structure,
- Understand the culture and context of the organisation, and
- Avoid applying “big firm” solutions that simply don’t fit.
The expertise gap
Reward is both broad and deep. Not only is there a huge width of elements, but it needs to be both strategic and tactical. It touches on wider HR from learning and development to employment policies and compliance, Finance and employee experience, and requires knowledge and experience of the wider market. It’s rare for one person to cover it all and even rarer for an SME to justify hiring that person on a permanent basis.
That’s why flexible, external reward support makes sense. It provides access to the right level of expertise, continuity, and insight without the overhead.
Why it matters even more for SMEs
SMEs arguably have less room for error. They have tighter budgets and smaller teams, so every hire, every pay decision, and every retention strategy counts.
They often can’t afford high turnover or lengthy recruitment cycles. Investing in smart, tailored reward design helps them get, grow, and keep the right people which in turn fuels growth, innovation, and stability.
And what about benefits?
It often feels like benefits are only available to those in big firms, especially ones like Private Medical Insurance which are based on spreading risk and need lots of participants to do so. But at Reward Heads we know which providers recognise the needs of SMEs. And we developed solutions for our own small business with a real focus on wellness, personalisation and choice and ensuring that these don’t become an admin burden (or require costly systems).
So where do we start?
In short, Reward support helps SMEs compete like the big players but in a way that fits their size, culture, and ambitions. And that is one of the reasons that Reward Heads projects with clients are always bespoke and not generic. With the right guidance, SMEs can design reward strategies that are not just affordable, but effective, sustainable, and human.
We do this in a range of ways, from short term embedded resource to run pay review and bonus schemes, to specific projects like grading and market benchmarking, to thinking partners where we bring the outside knowledge and experience and work with you to apply it to your organisations, to coaching programmes.
